Think of the spot where something does not quite come off. Look at a person, and that spot is a weak point they carry around — the thing they keep not managing. Look at a plan, and the same spot is the moment it might not come off, which is exactly when you need a second idea ready. One word, two places to stand: on the weak point itself, or just past it, holding the backup.

Two branches

noun · B2

A fault or weak point — either in a person's character, such as a bad temper or always being late, or in the way an organisation or a system does its job.

preposition · B2

Used to offer a second choice: if the first plan does not work or is not possible, then try this other one. Failing that points back to the plan just mentioned, and failing can also come straight before a noun — failing an agreement, failing a reply by Friday.
