A person, thing or situation that takes your good feeling away and leaves you flat. It is used in the singular, almost always as a downer, a bit of a downer or a real downer.

One way to hold this word: down plus -er, the one that takes something down. Everything the word names is moving in that one direction. A mood drops when the rain starts or the film ends badly. A body slows when a sedative takes hold, or goes all the way down when a cow in a shed cannot rise. Tools go down when a shift stops working. Same arrow every time, only the thing being lowered changes.

Wiktionary gives the first etymology of downer as English down + -er. A second, unrelated entry records an obsolete UK slang sense, a sixpence, perhaps related to tanner; that one is kept in our coverage record and is not part of this map.
