    A bummer is a situation that is disappointing or — the thing that happened, not a person. The concert is cancelled. It rains on picnic day. Your phone dies at the worst moment. In informal American English, people say “That’s a bummer” or “What a bummer.” It is casual and a little old-sounding now; some younger speakers would say something sharper instead, but you will still hear it all the time from people who grew up with it. It is mild. You can say it to a friend about bad luck. You would not put it in a job letter. (There is an older, different bummer meaning a person who hangs around doing nothing. That is not this meaning, and mixing the two will confuse people.)

組成For this meaning, from bum (“make unhappy,” as in “that bums me out”) + -er. It started as US drug slang. An older person-word bummer comes from German Bummler, “a drifter” — that is a different job for the same spelling.
