A depressant is a drug or other substance that slows your body down. Heart, breathing, and thinking all get quieter; you may feel calm, heavy, or sleepy. Alcohol is a depressant, even though some people feel lively after a drink at first — that lift is short, and the slowing comes after. Doctors set depressants against stimulants, which speed you up. This is a medical word about the body’s systems, not the everyday “this weather is depressing.” A depressant does not have to make you sad; it makes processes slower. Though actually, mixing two depressants (drink plus some sleeping pills, for example) can slow breathing enough to be dangerous — that is why doctors warn so hard.
