criticize, review a work · verb · C1
to look carefully at a book, film, or piece of work and say what is good and what is not good about it.
Picture someone looking closely at a thing and then saying out loud what they judge about it. In everyday use the judgement is the negative half — you point out what is wrong. In the professional sense the same close look reports both halves, good and bad, which is why a film critic is not simply someone who complains.
