From Latin applaudere 'to clap the hands together': ad- 'to' + plaudere 'to strike, clap'.
來自拉丁文 applaudere：ad-（向著）+ plaudere（拍打、擊掌）。plaudere 這個根也留在 plausible、explode 這些字裡。字源就是實實在在的「拍手」動作，所以後來用來說「公開稱讚」時，那個「當眾發出聲音」的味道還在。
