There is a standard sitting somewhere, and correctly says you hit it. Picture an answer sheet with a tick beside it: no gap between what you did and what was supposed to be there. What counts as 'supposed to be there' shifts with the situation — the true answer, the proper way to run a machine, the polite way to behave — but the move is always the same: you matched the mark.
