    An attitude in which someone thinks they are more able or more important than they really are, and lets other people see it.

    文法不可數名詞：通常不加 a/an，也不加 -s 來表示複數。

    「conceit」講的是「把自己看得太高，而且看得出來」。它比 pride 負面：pride 可以是正當的（proud of your work），conceit 幾乎一定是批評。跟 confidence 也不一樣——confident 的人相信自己做得到，conceited 的人是覺得自己比別人好。所以用了這個字，等於在說對方的問題不在能力，而在態度。這個字偏書面，日常口語更常說 big-headed。

    正式An unusual or clever idea that a writer or artist uses to present something, especially a surprising comparison that runs through a poem, play, or film.

    文法可數名詞：前面可以加 a/an，要表示複數時常常加 -s。

    這是文學和藝術課裡的 conceit：作者刻意用一個出人意料的比喻或設定，把兩件看起來無關的事扣在一起，讀者要想一下才會「喔！」。它跟一般的 metaphor 差在刻意和長度——metaphor 可能一句就結束，conceit 常常撐起整首詩或整部片。中文文學課多半譯成「巧喻」。
