A metaphor is a way of describing one thing by calling it something else, to show they are alike in some way — not literally true, but it helps the listener picture the idea. If you say 'time is money,' you don't mean time IS actually money; you mean it is valuable in the same way. Metaphors are everywhere in normal talk, not just in poems — 'he's drowning in work,' 'she has a heart of stone.' A close cousin is the , which does the same job but says it openly with 'like' or 'as' ('busy as a bee'). A metaphor skips those words and just says it directly.
