Humility is the good quality of not being too proud of yourself. You still know what you can do; you just do not push it in other people's faces, and you can admit when you are wrong or when someone else knows more. Teachers, religious talk, and workplace talk all use it with approval: a leader with humility listens; a student with humility can still learn. It is not the same as thinking you are worthless, and it is not the same as humiliation. Humiliation is shame poured on you. Humility is a way you choose to stand. People also talk about false humility — pretending to be modest so others will praise you. That use is a warning, not praise.

組成From humble + -ity, with the mb sound reduced to m (compare plumbing). From Latin humilitas, from humilis, ‘low’, from humus, ‘ground, earth’.
