Wiktionary traces chisel through Middle English chisel and Old Northern French chisel, cisel, back to Late Latin cīsōrium 'cutting tool', from Latin caedō 'to cut', and marks it a doublet of scissors. The root simply says cutting tool, which is what the core image is.
