- 1
To hew is to cut something with a tool that has a hard edge — an axe, a hatchet, a heavy knife — often into wood or stone, and often with strong, repeated blows. You might hew a tree, hew logs into beams, or hew a figure out of rock. It is an old, rather verb; in ordinary talk people usually say cut, chop, or hack. Though actually, English kept a second, slightly stretched use: to hew to a line, a rule, or a plan means to stay very close to it, from the old picture of cutting wood evenly along a marked line. That use shows up in news and speeches more than in kitchens.
砍;劈
組成Does not split. From Middle English hewen, from Old English hēawan, going back through West Germanic to a very old root meaning “to strike, hew, forge.”
