From Middle English cariage, from Old Northern French cariage, from carier "to carry" — literally "the carrying / the thing that carries".
carriage 來自古法語北方方言 cariage，動詞是 carier「載、搬」——也就是現代英文的 carry。字面意思就是「載這件事／載東西的那個」，這正好解釋了為什麼這個字一半的意思是動作（運送、運費），一半是物件（馬車、車廂、滑架）：兩邊都是同一個 carry 生出來的。
