A chariot is a small, fast vehicle with two wheels, pulled by horses, used in the ancient world for war and for racing. Think of Egypt, Greece, and Rome: a driver standing in a light open cart, not sitting in a covered coach. It is not the four-wheeled carriage of later centuries, which carried people in more comfort. You meet chariots in history, in the Bible, in films, and in sport stories about the old circus . Though actually, many languages — including Chinese — later used a “war cart” word for modern tanks, so the old horse picture and the metal picture can get mixed. Poets also stretch chariot for any grand vehicle, even the sun’s chariot across the sky, but that is picture-language. In plain talk it stays the ancient two-wheeled horse cart.

組成From Middle English chariot, from Old French chariot, from char, “cart”, from Latin carrus, “wagon”. The Romans borrowed carrus from Gaulish *karros, from Proto-Celtic *karros, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱr̥sós. It took the place of Old English hrædwæġn, literally “fast wagon”.
