Someone stays where they are while time goes past. They are not moving on, not giving up, and not doing anything about it yet; they are simply letting the hours run and staying put. From that one picture you can get living in a place, waiting for the right moment, and holding out against something unpleasant.

Old English bidan meant to stay, to remain, to wait for. The modern uses are all still that one action, applied to different things: a place, a moment, or a hardship.
