Disbelief is the feeling that something is not true, or cannot really be happening. It is not a calm, careful ‘I disagree.’ It is the jolt: the news has arrived, but the mind will not take it in yet. People feel it with bad shocks and with good ones — a crash, a death, a prize they never expected. English loves the phrase in disbelief: someone stands there shaking their head, laughing a little, or going quiet. Though actually, in everyday talk we often say ‘I can’t believe it’ and save disbelief for that frozen moment, or for writing. It is not the same as simply not knowing, and it is not (in ordinary use) a religious word for ‘having no faith’ — that older use exists, but will almost always meet the shock-and-rejection sense.
