apply, put into practice · verb · B1
to use a method, an idea, or a rule in a real situation.
Picture pressing one thing onto another until they are in contact: cream onto skin, a hand onto a brake pedal. That contact is the whole word. What gets brought into contact can also be a rule onto a case, a method onto a problem, a word onto a person, or yourself onto a task.
Apply is from Old French aploiier and Latin applicare 'attach to, join, connect', from ad- 'to' plus plicare 'to fold'. Etymonline gives the etymological sense as 'bring things in contact with one another'; the use for lotions and plasters placed in contact with the body is recorded in the early 15th century, and the sense 'seek a job by submitting an application' only from 1851.
