核心畫面

One way to hold this word: something small keeps picking at you and will not let go — not a blow, just a poke that comes again and again. A person who has been poked like that is vexed. Hold that picture and the phrase a vexed question makes sense too, because a question can poke at a whole of people for years.

可以想成這樣一個畫面:有件小事一直在戳你,而且戳個沒完。它不是一記重擊,就是那種一再回來的騷擾。被這樣戳著的人,就是更多收起可以想成這樣一個畫面:有件小事一直在戳你,而且戳個沒完。它不是一記重擊,就是那種一再回來的騷擾。被這樣戳著的人,就是 vexed。把這個畫面記住,a vexed question 也就通了:一個問題也可以這樣戳一整屋子的人,一戳就是好幾年。

From the word’s history

From Middle English vexed, vexede, vexit — by surface analysis, the verb vex plus -ed. The -ed ending means it has been done to you: a vexed person is a person something has vexed.

來自中古英語 vexed、vexede、vixid,構詞上就是動詞 vex(惹人心煩)加上 -ed。-ed 表示「被弄成這樣」,所以 a vexed person 就是被某件事煩到的人。這個「被煩到」的底,兩個用法都共用。

問題在煩人

同一個「被戳」的畫面轉了個方向:這次被貼上 vexed 的不是人,而是那個一直戳人的問題。這是用法上的連結,不是說這個字先有問題的意思。
