Think of a situation as an object with two faces: the side turned down towards you, heavy and unwelcome, and the side facing up. The upside is that upper face — the one good thing you can point to in something that is otherwise going badly. It comes as a pair with downside, and it usually shows up when someone is deliberately looking for the bright face of a bad object.
