You can picture advantage as standing a step ahead of the others in a race — higher ground, a head start, something extra that puts you in a better position to win. From that one picture of 'being out in front,' the word spreads to any good point a thing has, to using a situation to get ahead, and even to the tennis call for the player who has just pulled ahead.
