Picture one thing resting in contact with another and held up by it — a cup on the table, your hand on the wall. Two surfaces touch, and one carries the other. Almost everything 'on' does grows from this one picture: from physical 'touching the surface' it stretches to touching a moment in time, touching a topic, leaning on a power source to keep running, and — as an adverb — the action staying in contact and carrying on, or a machine sitting in its switched-on, working state.
