A useful way to hold this word is: put a statement next to the facts and see that the two do not match. That is 'untrue'. It says nothing about whether the speaker meant to lie — the claim may simply be wrong. It is heavier and more formal than 'not true', and it usually sits after a verb: That is untrue. / The proved untrue.
