A misconception is a wrong idea that people hold because they have not understood the subject well. It is not a lie they tell on purpose, and not a wild guess they already doubt. They believe it. Science teachers, doctors, and news writers use the word a lot: “a common misconception is that…” It is fairly formal, but you will meet it in textbooks and in careful talk. It is cleaner than a simple mistake: a mistake can be one wrong step; a misconception is the whole picture sitting wrong in someone’s head. Though actually, writers also pin it on any popular myth, even when the idea is only a bit off, not fully false. People hold a misconception; they do not usually “do” one.

mis-（錯誤）加 conception（觀念）。
組成mis-（錯、誤）+ conception（想法、概念）。後一半可追溯到拉丁文 concipiō，「接進來」，後來才有「在心裡形成一個想法」的意思。
