If a story, a fear, or an accusation is baseless, it has no facts under it and no good reason to stand on. You use the word to show you : you are saying the claim should not have been made. A baseless is one nobody can prove; a baseless accusation is an attack with nothing behind it. It is a rather formal, serious word — you will see it in the news, in official statements, and in angry replies, more than in chat between friends. Though actually, in everyday talk people often just say that is not true or there is no reason for that. Base here means the facts or reasons an idea sits on, not a military base and not first base in baseball.
