Think of one piece of business pushed all the way through to done — an exchange that starts, moves, and finishes, usually with money passing from one hand to another.

From the word’s history

From Latin transigere 'to drive or carry through, accomplish, settle' (trans- 'through' + agere 'to drive, do'). A transaction is literally a piece of business driven all the way through to completion.
