You can picture a long tube you hold up to your eye to pull far things close. But hold the object itself in your hands, not just its purpose: an old telescope is built from several tubes of different widths, so you can pull it out long to use it and then push the sections down inside one another until the whole thing is short enough to fit in a pocket. Both halves of this word live in that one object — the looking, and the sliding-shorter.
