To move or happen faster, or to make something do that. Both directions work: the car sped up (no object), and we need to speed up the process (object). It splits, and a pronoun goes in the middle: speed it up. The opposite is "slow down" — learn them as a pair. Works for anything with a speed: cars, hearts, computers, plans.
