    When a gas or steam condenses, it cools and turns into a liquid; you can also condense a gas by cooling it on purpose.

    文法及物、不及物兩種都可以：後面可以接受詞，也可以不接。

    「condense」講的是氣體遇冷變成液體。最常見的畫面可以想成洗完澡的浴室鏡子——空氣裡的水氣碰到冷的表面，就變成一顆一顆的水珠。它可以是自然發生的（Steam condensed on the window），也可以是人刻意讓它發生的（The gas is cooled and condensed）。常搭配 condense on（凝結在…上）和 condense into（凝結成…），名詞是 condensation。

    To make something spoken or written shorter by using fewer words or leaving out detail, while keeping the same information.

    文法及物動詞：動作後面要接受詞。

    把一段話或一篇文章「壓短」，但要講的東西不能少——這是 condense 跟 shorten 最大的差別：shorten 只說變短，condense 帶有「內容還在，只是擠得更緊」的意思。所以老師或主管說 condense 的時候，是在要求你重寫得更緊，而不是叫你刪掉幾段。常見句型是 condense A into B，例如 condense the chapter into two pages；用在報告、摘要、簡報上最自然，語氣中性偏正式。

    To make a liquid such as milk or soup thicker and stronger in taste by taking some of the water out of it.

    這個 condense 用在液體上：把水分抽掉，讓湯或牛奶變得更濃、味道更重。台灣最熟悉的例子就是 condensed milk（煉乳）和 condensed soup（濃縮湯罐頭，要加水才喝）。它幾乎都以過去分詞當形容詞出現；直接當動詞用（condense the milk）多半只出現在食品加工的說明裡。跟 boil down（熬到收乾）意思很近，boil down 更口語。
