Think of socially as a word that points at one particular side of life: the side where people are with other people. Picture a room with people in it, talking, sitting together, noticing each other. Socially puts a frame around that room and says: judge this from in here. Sometimes the room is small, just you and the people you meet and like. Sometimes the walls come down and the room becomes a whole country. But it is always the same question underneath: how do things look when we look at people together rather than at one person alone?

English social comes, through French, from Latin socialis, which was built on socius, a companion. The companion is still visible in the modern word: every use of socially is about people who are alongside other people.

Two branches
大房間：把牆拆掉，看整個社會
把小房間的牆拆掉，房間就變成整個社會，同一個手勢仍然指著「人跟人在一起」，只是人數從幾個變成幾百萬個。一旦房間變這麼大，裡面自然會出現三件事：整體的好壞、每個人站的位置、還有大家默認的規矩。這一族的三個意思，就是這三件事各自的說法。
