in a way that is about money, trade, business, or how a place earns and spends.
Picture someone running a household with only so much money, food and space, and deciding where each bit goes so that nothing runs out and nothing is wasted. That one picture opens in two directions: doing a thing in that careful, nothing-wasted way (pack economically, live economically), and talking about the whole money-and-resources side of a place (economically, the town is struggling). One is the habit, the other is the subject area — both can be thought of as looking at life through the question 'how are the limited resources being handled?'
English economy comes from Greek oikonomia 'household management, thrift' (oikos 'house' + nemein 'manage'). It meant 'household management' in the 1530s, 'frugality, judicious use of resources' by the 1660s, and 'the wealth and resources of a country' from the 1650s on. So the thrift sense and the national-economy sense are the same household picture, once small and once very large.
