Etiquette is the set of formal rules for polite behaviour in a group — how to eat, greet, dress, or write so you do not yourself or other people. There is table etiquette, business etiquette, wedding etiquette. It is not the same as being kind. You can follow etiquette and still feel cold; you can break it and still be a good person. Though actually, older speakers often treat etiquette as serious and rather fixed, while younger people may call the same rules stiff and follow a looser . The word itself feels a little formal, even a little old-fashioned, in everyday talk; people also say manners or “what’s polite here.” In a club, an office, or an online group, “the etiquette” can mean “how we do things,” even when nobody wrote the rules down.
組成From French étiquette, which first meant a small piece of paper stuck on a bag to say what was inside — a label or ticket. The “polite rules” meaning grew later. Further back it comes from an Old French verb meaning “to attach, to stick,” from a Frankish / Germanic root meaning “to be sharp, to pierce.”
