The '-ly' ending comes from Old English '-līċe', going back to a Germanic word meaning 'body, form' — so the adverb originally described the shape or manner in which something is done: in a public manner.
字尾 -ly 來自古英語 -līċe，可以追到日耳曼語一個表示「身體、形體」的詞——所以副詞原本是在講「事情以什麼樣的形體、什麼樣的方式進行」。publicly 就是「以公開的方式進行」，這也解釋了為什麼這個字總是在描述一件事情的做法，而不是事情本身。
