One way to hold it: crossing a line that religion has drawn. The act is judged not by a court but in the eyes of God, and it leaves a mark on the person who did it. Everyday English then borrows that heavy word for light purposes — calling a waste of good food "a sin" is a joke built on how serious the original word is. The maths sin is not this word at all.
