verb · C2
To put something in a place where other people will not find it.
You can picture secrete as setting one thing apart from the rest. A takes a little of what is in the blood, separates it out, and sends it where it is needed — that is the biological use. The other use, hiding something, can be held with the same picture: you take one thing out of the shared, visible world and set it apart where nobody looks. Useful as a memory hook, but the two uses reached modern English by different , and the picture is not a claim that one grew out of the other.
The packet's source traces the biological verb to Latin secretus, the participle of secerno, to separate, reinforced by a back-formation from secretion. The hiding verb is given separately as an alteration of secret.
