Drops of salty water pushing out through your skin when your body is working hard or under stress — from heat, exercise, illness, or nerves. That one bodily picture spreads two ways: toward the effort that produces the sweat (hard work), and toward the fear that also makes you break out in it (cold sweat). The clothes you sweat in, and the food that 'sweats' on a low heat, hang off the same drop-of-water image.
