To emit is to send something out from yourself or from a thing: light, heat, a sound, a smell, a gas, a signal. A lamp emits light. A phone may emit a beep. A factory emits smoke. It is a little formal and scientific; in casual talk people often say give off, send out, or make (a sound). Though actually, in climate talk emit has become the ordinary verb for “put greenhouse gases into the air” — countries emit carbon dioxide. You emit a thing, not a person. Watch the , which means “leave out”. One letter, opposite energy: emit sends out; leaves out.
