From Latin repraesentare 'to make present, set in view, show', from re- + praesentare 'to present, place before'. To represent is to make a group present again through a stand-in — the exact idea behind both the delegate and the 'typical of the whole' senses.

來自拉丁文 repraesentare(使再度出現、擺到眼前、展示),由 re- 加 praesentare(呈現、擺到面前)組成。represent 就是「透過一個替身,把某群人事再擺到眼前」——這正好同時撐起「代表某群人的人」和「能代表整體的典型」兩層意思。
