A woman who sits in a congress, and especially a woman in the United States House of Representatives. Same job as a congressman: she votes on laws, speaks for her district, and appears in the news as “the congresswoman from…”. Though actually older English sometimes used congressman even when the person was a woman, or for the job in general; congresswoman was needed as the clear pair. As with congressman, this almost always means the House, not the Senate (those members are senators). Other countries may have a congress, but nearly always meet the US sense. Some speakers now say representative or member of Congress instead of marking gender in the title.
