A representational painting or style shows things the way they look in real life — a tree you can tell is a tree, a face that looks like a face. People usually set it against abstract art, where you may see colour and shape that do not copy a real object. Though actually, “as they actually appear” is already a bit tidy: the painter still chooses the light, the moment, the feeling, so it is never a simple copy… except when the artist is trying very hard to make it one. This is an art-class word, not a shopping-mall word. Do not mix it up with representative, which means standing for a group (a representative in government, or a representative sample). Same family of pieces, different job. For , the painting sense is the one you will actually meet: art that shows the world rather than turning it into pure shape.
