You can picture someone who has been told what to do by whoever is in charge — and who turns round and refuses, openly. The word holds two things at once: there is a power above you, and you push back against it instead of going along. Sometimes that push is armed and organised (fighting the government), sometimes it is one person quietly going their own way, and sometimes it is not even a person — your own stomach or legs refusing to carry on.
