A nonconformist is不隨俗的人指的是 a person who will not follow the usual ways of thinking or behaving in their group不願意照著自己團體裡一般想法或行為方式走的人。They dress differently他們穿著跟別人不一樣, ask different questions問不一樣的問題, or refuse a rule that everyone else treats as obvious或是拒絕遵守大家都覺得理所當然的規定。

We use it as a noun (she is a nonconformist) and as an adjective (a nonconformist idea). In ordinary modern English this is the social meaning — not, first of all, a church word.

We use it as a noun我們可以把它當名詞用 (she is a nonconformist她是個特立獨行的人) and as an adjective也可以當形容詞用 (a nonconformist idea一個特立獨行的想法)。In ordinary modern English在現代日常英文裡 this is the social meaning這是指社會層面的意思——not, first of all, a church word而不是先指教會方面的詞。

Though actually, in older British writing, a Nonconformist with a capital N is a Protestant who stood outside the Church of England; that is a related but narrower use.

Though actually不過, in older British writing在比較舊的英式文章裡, a Nonconformist with a capital N開頭大寫的 Nonconformist is一詞指的是 a Protestant who stood outside the Church of England站在英國國教會之外的新教徒; that is a related but narrower use這是相關但範圍更窄的用法。

Today, if a magazine calls someone a nonconformist, they usually mean the person does not go along with the crowd. It can be or a little , depending on who is talking.

Today現在, if a magazine calls someone a nonconformist如果雜誌說某人是 nonconformist, they usually mean the person does not go along with the crowd通常是說這個人不隨波逐流。It can be admiring這可能是讚賞 or a little exasperated或帶點無奈, depending on who is talking要看是誰在說。
