A nonconformist is a person who will not follow the usual ways of thinking or behaving in their group. They dress differently, ask different questions, or refuse a rule that everyone else treats as obvious. We use it as a noun (she is a nonconformist) and as an adjective (a nonconformist idea). In ordinary modern English this is the social meaning — not, first of all, a church word. Though actually, in older British writing, a Nonconformist with a capital N is a Protestant who stood outside the Church of England; that is a related but narrower use. Today, if a magazine calls someone a nonconformist, they usually mean the person does not go along with the crowd. It can be or a little , depending on who is talking.
