Someone walking behind another person, going where that person goes. Not the one choosing the road — the one who has decided this is the road worth walking. Everything follower means comes from that picture of taking your direction from someone else.

From the word’s history

From Old English folgere 'follower, attendant, disciple' — follow + -er. The word has meant 'one who goes after another' continuously since Old English; the modern senses are that same picture applied to ideas and to screens.
