A traditionalist is a person who prefers the old ways and is slow to welcome change. It is the person-word that goes with .
The word is usually used about a particular area, not about someone's whole life. A traditionalist in music might use email happily and drive a new car — the label attaches to the thing being discussed. So you will read "a traditionalist about grammar", "traditionalists within the party", "a traditionalist when it comes to weddings".
It also works as an adjective: "a traditionalist view", "traditionalist Catholics". Both uses are common and neither is more correct.
On feeling: traditionalist is gentler than the words nearby. Calling someone conservative drags in . Calling them old-fashioned or a dinosaur is rude. Traditionalist is the polite, almost respectful choice — it says this person has reasons, even if you think the reasons are wrong. Newspapers reach for it exactly because it lets them describe one side without insulting it. Though actually, in a heated argument the tone can flip; said with a certain face, "oh, he's a traditionalist" means the same as "he'll never change".
