Qualitative is about what kind of thing something is — its nature, its feel, its standard — not about how many or how much. A qualitative change is a change in type, not just in size. In school and university, qualitative research means listening, watching, and reading people’s words, rather than counting. The pair word is quantitative, which is about numbers. Though actually, in everyday English people often just say about quality or not about the numbers; qualitative is at home in reports, science, and social studies. It is a calm, formal adjective, not a word you need for ordinary chat.
