核心畫面

One way to hold prodigal: a pair of hands pushing things out and away, and never once stopping to count what is left. Watch the money go and the word sounds like a warning. Watch the same hands hand out praise, or a tree hand out fruit, and nothing is wrong at all — the pushing-out has simply landed on someone who is glad to catch it. The word itself does not choose between those two. The situation around it does.

From the word’s history

Prodigal goes back through Late Latin prodigalis to Latin prodigus 'wasteful, lavish', from prodigo 'to drive forth, squander' — prod- (forward) plus ago (drive). The driving-forward is still the whole picture. The famous 'son who leaves and returns' meaning is a separate route: it comes by allusion to the parable in Luke 15:11-32.

prodigal 經由晚期拉丁文 prōdigālis 回到拉丁文 prōdigus(揮霍的、豐盛的),再往上是 prōdigō「往前趕出去」——prōd-(向前)加 agō(趕)。那個「往外趕」到今天還是整個字的畫面。至於有名的「離家又回頭的兒子」那個意思,走的是另一條路:它來自《路加福音》15:11–32 的典故。

Three branches

往外倒到不剩:揮霍

這一支就是核心畫面本身,而且是被責備的那一面:東西出去得太快,而且沒人在數。

adjective · C1

Spending money, or using up time and other things, in a careless way, without thinking about how fast it is all going.

揮霍的;浪費的

往外倒到滿出來:慷慨

同一個往外倒的動作,換一個角度看。差別不在動作,在接到東西的人覺得可惜還是覺得幸運。

adjective · C2

Giving out or producing something very freely, in far larger amounts than are needed — usually with no blame attached. Often followed by of or with.

慷慨給予的;豐盛得滿出來的

走出去的那個人:浪子

這一支跟核心畫面相連,但不是直接長出來的。它繞過一個故事:故事裡的兒子先揮霍,可是英文今天用這個說法時,重點幾乎都落在他回來那一刻,而不是他花掉的錢。

adjective · C1

A prodigal son or a prodigal daughter is someone who left their family and home in a way the family did not agree with, and who is later sorry about it and comes back.

浪子;離家又回頭的兒女
