From Old French posicion, from Latin positiō 'a putting', from pōnō 'to place'.

You can picture position as the spot where something sits in relation to everything around it — its place on a map. From that one idea of 'where it stands', the word stretches to where you stand in life, in a debate, in a company, or in a race.
