You can picture 'replace' as putting one thing into the spot where another thing was: the old one leaves, a new one goes into that place. The 're-' carries 'back / again', and 'place' is the spot — so the whole word is 'put into the place (again)'.

From the word’s history

From re- 'back, again' + place (verb) 'to put in a spot'. First 'to restore to a former place' (1590s); the sense 'to fill the place of with something else / take the place of' came later. Both grow from the single image of putting something into a place.

Two branches

replace with something new · verb · B1

To take away a person or thing and put a new one there instead.

put back in place · verb · B1

To return something to the spot it came from.

放回
