From Middle English overtaken, likely altering overnimen (Old English oferniman) with take; equivalent to over + take.

over 加 take，可能是舊字 overnimen 換用 take 而成。

Something behind you catches up and passes you. You were in front; now you are not. Whether it is a faster car, a rising rival, or a wave of fear, the shape is the same: it came from behind, it caught you, and it went past.

你在路上走，有個東西從你後面追上來，追到了，然後越過你去到前面。原本你在前，現在你在後。這個畫面裡有三個動作缺一不可——來自後方、追上、超過。不管超過你的是一台開得比較快的車、一個成長比較快的對手，還是一股突然湧上來的情緒，形狀都是這一個。over- 給的是「越過去」，take 給的是「抓到你」，合起來就是抓到了還越過去。
