Picture a narrow strip hemmed in on both sides — a path just wide enough to pass along, with a hedge, a wall, or a painted line holding it in. Every meaning is that same bounded strip, whether it is dirt, tarmac, a running track, or an invisible route across the sea.

From the word’s history

From Old English lanu 'a narrow hedged-in road', a common Germanic word for 'a passage between enclosing lines'. That fenced-in narrowness is exactly what has stayed constant through every modern sense.
