You can think of nuts as a screw that has worked loose inside someone. While it is tight, everything stays in place. Once it comes loose, whatever is inside comes straight out and nobody is steering any more: the sense comes loose and the person seems crazy, the feeling comes loose and a crowd screams or a parent shouts, the liking comes loose and someone cannot stop talking about what they love. Even the shout Nuts! is a word that slips out before you have decided to say it.

Four branches

adjective · B1

Crazy — thinking or behaving in a way that seems wild and out of control. It is an informal word, used about people and also about ideas, plans and situations, and it is usually said in a joking way, not about real illness.

adjective · B1

If a crowd or a person goes nuts, they suddenly get very loud and excited because something good has just happened — a goal, a win, or news everyone was hoping for.

adjective · B2

To like someone or something so much that other people can see it — a person you are in love with, or a thing you talk about and go back to again and again.

interjection · B2

Said out loud when something bad or annoying happens — you miss the bus, you forget your keys. It shows that you are annoyed or disappointed, and it is mild enough to say in front of anyone.
